Part 109: Morbid Misinterpretations of Pop Songs
Entry 101: Morbid Misinterpretations of Pop SongsThe Sky Knights have been taught a lesson and probably won't attack Caldisla again. Probably.
Anyway, the party heads to Florem.

The region is surprisingly quiet and calm. As the party passes through Witherwood, they spot a peaceful wildlife scene.

Ringabel's still trying to compete with Tiz when his own areas of expertise are elsewhere. Edea'd probably love to talk fashion or swordplay, for example, and Ringabel would be far better with those topics than Tiz (or Agnès).

The city of Florem seems improved. The focus on beauty is no longer to the creepily obsessive extreme DeRosa's drugs induced.

At least, not for most residents. Kid you're like ten, chill

We know in this world, Einheria rebelled against DeRosa to save Mephilia. It appears the Bloodrose Legion became largely defunct before our arrival. DeRosa's nowhere to be seen.

With no immediate threat in the area, the party decides to enjoy themselves and have some local cuisine.

Speaking to the Matriarch gives the same conversations as last chapter: Olivia is alive, but in hiding.
No Olivia, Mephilia is free... But there is one side quest marker in Florem:

At the very end of Florem Gardens, Mephilia's old station, the party spots three distant figures.
Eternians! Victoria and Kikyo the ninja, judging by the looks of it. Those two alone could be a potent force.
We'd better find out what evil plot they're up to before it's too late!

...

This conversation between a feral girl, a mentally broken mass murderer, and a silent assassin is going about as smoothly as you'd hope.

Ah, disagreements on what consitutes girl power vs. man power. Just the battle we came looking for.

This is the first time in the game Victoria's sounded genuinely happy.

*POOF*

Isn't it great when socially awkward individuals connect with each other? These three are the closest we'll get to witnessing Luxendarc's version of a conversation on the Something Awful forums.

Beginning to suspect 'girl power' is just whatever they find neat at the moment, but at least they aren't being angry, tortured souls going insane and committing war crimes.
Unfortunately, just then, the party arrives.

Good job ruining the moment.

Artemia still puts out a ton of damage, and as usual, Victoria will kill you if you don't have poison immunity.

All power no finesse does describe the party pretty well.

The three gracefully run off.

As the party sets off for the first crystal, Edea and Agnès vow to form their own brand of girl power.

There are no new scenes connected to the crystals this chapter.

The party does gather to chat afterwards, however.

After Agnès's nap, the party packs up and heads to the next continent: Eisenberg.

On the way, Edea tells the others about the Venus sisters. (This is accessible after doing the Girl Power fight.)
D's Journal: The Sisters' Tale posted:
I heard the strangest thing from Edea. About how Artemia came to be raised by frostis. How her sisters came to let it happen. Really, each of those three sisters is a piece of work in her own right...
Edea was fourteen at the time. That makes Einheria twenty-four, Mephilia twenty, and Artemia a scant thirteen years old.
They met deep in the woods at Eternia's west. One rare day when the templar was free from work, the family set out for a picnic. After disappearing for a short while, Edea returned to her parents sobbing, face covered in cuts and scratches. Her half-panicked father asked what had happened, but she merely pointed to the woods as she cried.
Joined by the Dark Knight Alternis Dim, the templar strode into the forest, face set in fury. There, he found a single beast--no, on closer inspection, a young girl--lying on her back, knocked flat by Edea. Clothed in tatters and growling like an animal, she lacked the strength to stand. More than her injuries, it was hunger that ailed her.
The templar took her in his arms and carried her back to his family. She took the food he offered like a feral beast, and passed out as soon as her belly was full. They later learned her name was Artemia--the same as Einheria's younger sister, gone missing the last year. The templar and his wife exchanged grave nods.
The story jumps back one year... Edea had by that point completed three years' intensive training under Swordmaster Kamiizumi's tutelage, having begun at the age of eleven in accordance with custom. As the leader of a division of the Eternian Forces, Kamiizumi was often unable to leave Central Command, leaving his head pupil, Einheria, to run the dojo in his absence.
One day, a traveling swordsman drifted through, and Einheria met his challenge. When no victor had emerged by the day's end, each acknowledged the other's skill and found in them a kindred spirit. "I'll be joining him for three days' training," she said to Edea the next day. "See this letter gets to Mephilia." In truth, her journey would span an entire year.
Mephilia had been lauded as a genius since childhood. All who witnessed her skill in magic expected her to lead the duchy forward in the years to come. One day, a minor incident erupted at the academy. The students preparing to face their final examination were thoroughly bested by the far younger Mephilia, and in their dejection all declined to take the test.
The panicked professors decided instead to send Mephilia to the Yulyana Woods to take the test in their place. "I know it's sudden," read the letter she addressed to Einheria, "but I'll be leaving the country for three days. I would appreciate if you would see to Artemia in my absence." She was aboard an airship to Yulyana within the hour.
Just as expected, Mephilia passed the test in one go. Less expected, however, was her meeting with a certain playboy in a port town on her journey home. She went with him, witnesses claim, and was missing for a full year. It seems she sailed the world with him those months, ultimately returning to Eternia aboard a ship called the Funky Francisca...
Left at home alone, Artemia could only tremble in hunger as she awaited her sisters' return. On the fourth night, Eternia saw its first snow of the year, and beyond her window, Artemia saw the smiling faces of frostis dancing through the air. Lured outside, she, too, would not see home for another year. Instead of her sisters, it was that pack of creatures who would raise her.
When the templar found her, Artemia still bore two letters, badly worn but still sealed. One bore Einheria's name, addressed to Mephilia. The other was from Mephilia, destined for Einheria.
He opened the letters and read their contents, then took the girl straight to Kamiizumi's dojo. He arrived just after Einheria, finally back from her year's training, who in turn had just witnessed Mephilia's return from a year's wandering (and with a man in tow!). The two were locked in a furious argument.
In the year that followed, Einheria mastered the spear, and succeeded in scaring off her sister's playboy paramour. Mephilia, for her part, also honed her skills, and Artemia cultivated her already uncanny hunting prowess. At the age of fifteen, the little ranger would join her sisters in their post to Florem.
Quite the family, I must say.
Real cases of feral children normally involve isolation starting around ages 0-4, and the isolation is usually significantly longer than a year. As a pre-teen only away from humans for one year, Artemia shouldn't have become anywhere near feral. Plus, she should have been old enough to seek help and people instead of somehow living outside on scraps in below freezing weather. One way Artemia's scenario makes sense is if she had a preexisting mental disability, another is that even before she ran away she led an isolated, unhappy life. Her subsequent admission to the military is just the grimly bitter cherry on top.
Bringing a dose of realism to Braev's duchy doesn't do it any favors.

This world's Grandship is similar to the last one except for a rumor of the ghost ship.
Wait. The ghost ship is operated by Barbarossa. We already fought him, so what's there for us?

Yes, Edea, just like the other handful of times we've been here. The more worlds and side quests you do, the less some of the later cutscenes make sense.

Alive, dead, Barbarossa doesn't care. He's content to chill with his bros.

Suleiman's ghost is here again, too.

Suleiman was described as being a playboy earlier in his life, but in the end he cared deeply for Mephilia, even beyond death. This is a bittersweet ending to their story, but at least this time Mephilia and Barbarossa came out all right.

On Eisenberg's mainland, the party heads straight to the bridge to take out Eternia's top idol.

Early in the fight, an unexpected thief shows up.

Why's Jackal traveled all the way to another continent? He doesn't come across as a Praline fanboy...

Once either of the two is brought down, Jackal skedaddles and drags Praline with him.

They run behind the Swordbearer line, leaving the party behind.

It's unusual to see two branches of the Eternian Forces meet out in the field. Given the competence of the Eternian divisions, I'm sure this will go smoothly.

Jackal is mixing up Black Blades leader Kamiizumi with his own 'chief', Khint the spell blade mercenary/Ex-Eternian commander. This can be easy to miss, since Khint's robe is such a dark green it looks black.
Jackal and Praline take off in an airship heading to Ancheim, abandoning the Swordbearers at Eisen Bridge and allowing the Black Blades and Swordbearers to be overrun by the superior numbers of the Shieldbearer forces. With nothing left to do in the civil war, the party follows the thief and idol.

Ancheim, like Florem, appears to be in decent shape. Part of that is due to Profiteur apparently not being here.

Praline and Jackal came to see the King. The party can sneak in the normal back way if they want, but they just end up dumped back inside the front entrance.

As unorthodox as it is, I recommend using the front door, which is now open both day and night due to Praline and Jackal barging in.

Says the person wearing frills and bunny ears.

Sure we killed Jackal a couple times, but you know, this kid makes some good points when he's not being driven mad.

Says the thief with the lock ornament on the back of his hoodie.

In case you thought maybe this branch of the Eternian Forces had a good reason for ruining the Eisenberg campaign: No. They didn't.

Khamer's just a doofus.

Praline's hands are relatively clean for a member of the Forces, despite the Black Blades' own dirty work. She didn't participate in the child slavery, assassinations, or Qada stuff.

Khamer and Praline do have something in common: an idealistic obliviousness that keeps them from seeing the extent of the damage they're doing.

You know, the party probably doesn't need to stop the Eternians.

Khamer accidently sabotaging the Black Blades, the supposed commander of the Bloodrose Legion missing, a chain of command outsourcing to a murderer-for-hire...

These guys are self-defeating.

Following the battle, Khamer is arrested and replaced by the Harena family line once again. Praline and Jackal escape, soon separating due to creative differences...

Jackal, kid...

Let's just...

Let's just move on to the second crystal.

Every world, we kill fewer Eternians. Every world, they're arguably less insane and evil. If we're still doing this a few worlds from now, their campaigns will comprise of sending tasteful gift baskets to other countries.

What about DeRosa, Profiteur, and Qada? They're still missing, and the few hints we've gotten point to them being as terrible as they've always been.

There's no guarantee we'll even meet them in this world. Once we awaken the other crystals, we're probably out of here...

Partway through their rest, Edea's lunch is interrupted by an arrow aimed for her head. She dodges out of the way just in time, chasing after the source. She's just quick enough to see a small person with a familiar furry purple tail bounding out of the temple.
Artemia is long gone by the time they check outside, but there's a letter attached to her arrow. It's addressed from Einheria, asking the party to come to Eternia City.

This version of Einheria is likely more on our side than not. No sense keeping her waiting.

Nothing new and no sign of Einheria right away, but look! Khint's kid is feeling well enough to be outside the medical center.

And over in the east corner of town square...

The girl runs off.

Another familiar figure walks up.

Now we know why she wasn't with Bahamut and company.

That is a pretty big intellectual leap for boyfriends...

But Barras's enthusiasm is probably a welcome relief from Victor's constant guilty sadsack state. Not to mention the whole madly obsessed with Victoria thing.

Edea charges over to the group.

...Edea pauses to catch her breath. Good thing these guys appear to be not hostile!

In case you're wondering how the whole message by arrow thing played out in game: it didn't. I made up that scene in the temple. The Artemia arrow bit happened completely offscreen. All you get is the mention of it in this scene.

Almost every scene in this chapter has a disconnect between what the party experiences and what the player experiences. We're privy to conversations before the party arrives and the party has significant events without the player knowing, evidenced through party chats and other references to events we never saw firsthand. This is a common storytelling technique, but usually its use is consistent throughout a story, rather than noticeably increasing, as it is in this game.

This increasing disconnect results in an unusual feeling: It makes the player feel separated from the party, as though they thought they were a party member privy to all the private moments, but are now realizing they're just an outsider looking in occasionally on what the party or the Eternians are up to. Was this feeling intended by the devs? That's open to interpretation...

One downside to it right now is we're missing out on what sounds like fun character bits in a game where the story relies heavily on the characters, to the extent that the main reward for pursuing most optional content is character moments.

Three terrible Eternians, one of whom is Einheria's superior, the other two with a connection to Khint... Hmm...

Ha hah ha, no, really?

Looks like we've got one satisfying battle ahead of us. We'll take down the terrible trio...

Along with the rest of the Eternian Forces who stand in the way. But Einheria doesn't have to know that.

Next: An average Lee family gathering.

In the fourth world, it appeared the water vestal Olivia had gone to ground somewehre in Florem, and had not been heard from.
D's Journal: Victoria the Arcanist posted:
In the fourth world, we encountered Victoria, Artemia, and Kikyo in the Florem Gardens. They were holding some kind of meeting, chatting on about girl power or something. They engaged us in battle, and when we defeated them, they hurled abuse at us as they withdrew. They left behind candy wrappers, a charm bracelet, and banners covered with scrawls.
D's Journal: Artemia the Ranger posted:
In the fourth world, we happened upon a meeting of three duchy women in Florem Gardens. Though none of them would normally be the type to value communication, they seemed attuned to one [an]other, and fought with great coordination. After defeating them, Artemia's parting words were, "They no have girl power!" This did not sit well with our female companions.
After Artemia left, we found a finely-crafted charm bracelet on the ground. This is apparently a very rare item, and Agnès's eyes lit up. Then Edea remembered that Artemia was raised by frostis as a child. I did not know what to say to that...
D's Journal: Konoe the Ninja posted:
In the fourth world, we saw the ninja Kikyo at Florem Gardens. She had been invited by Victoria, and Artemia was there, too. None of them excelled at communication, but when we encountered them they performed with admirable unity. A banner left behind after they withdrew had "girl power" scrawled on it in faint writing.
D's Journal: Jackal the Thief posted:
In the fourth world, we found the Jackal in the royal palace in Ancheim, after he had taken Praline from the battle at Eisen Bridge. According to the Jackal, the king plotted to use the performer's songs to further exploit his people! The king denied this vehemently, but we could not let it go unanswered. We put an end to their conspiracy.
D's Journal: Time Mage Khamer posted:
In the fourth world, we met King Khamer together with the Jackal and Praline at the palace in Ancheim. The Jackal spoke gleefully of the king's plot to exploit the people through Praline's song, though the king denied this with a flustered look. We defeated them, and both Praline and the Jackal absconded, leaving Khamer sitting on his throne, a shell of a man.
D's Journal: Praline, Diva of the Battlefield posted:
In the fourth world, Praline went missing from Eisen Bridge. Despite confusion between the Jackal and Praline, mixing up the swordmaster and Ciggma Khint--both expert swordsmen, tall and clad in gree--they somehow arrived in Ancheim to fulfill Khamer's request to ease the people's suffering. The Jackal and Praline's performance left the king in tears...
D's Journal: Holly the White Mage posted:
In the fourth world, we saw the white mage Holly in the city of Eternia for the first time. The valkyrie Einheria had planned a skirmish to test our mettle, and Holly joined the fray. After the battle, Einheria warned us of a terrible conspiracy. Holly said she would pass the information on to Victor, then left.
D's Journal: Spell Fencer Khint posted:
In the fourth world, we were summoned by the valkyrie Einheria, and dragged into a battle with the spell fencer Khint and the white mage Holly, who happened to be there. Evading their relentless assaults, we came out on top. Einheria then told us of a certain conspiracy, at which point Khint seemed to remember something, and a frown came over his face.
D's Journal: Einheria the Valkyrie posted:
In the fourth world, we were called to the city of Eternia by the valkyrie Einheria via a message sent by arrow. The spell fencer Khint and the white mage Holly also happened to be there, and Einheria made them join her in a battle to test our abilities. After the fight, she apparently deemed us worthy, and asked us to stop a plot taking place in the duchy.
